Construit par les Chantiers Augustin Normand du Havre à la fin des années 1950, l'Espadon a été mis en service en 1960. Il est l'avant-dernier rejeton d'une famille de 6 sous-marins : la classe des Narval. Long de 77 m, l'Espadon pouvait plonger pendant 5 à 6 jours.

The Espadon submarine is located inside the fortified lock, Avenue de la Forme Ecluse, Saint-Nazaire. Restoration work on Espadon in April 2021 (Photo: J.Bosger / St Nazaire Tourisme) Last year the city of Saint Nazaire, with help from other organisations, began a six month/450,000 Euro (396k GBP, 439k USD) restoration project on the sixty-year old submarine, to repair the corrosion and other deterioration. She reopened to visitors in July 21.

Le sous-marin Espadon a vécu deux vies pleines de rebondissements. La première a commencé en 1957 dans les Chantiers et Ateliers Augustin Normand du Havre. Trois ans plus tard, il reçoit le numéro S637 et commence sa carrière militaire. Pendant 25 ans, il sillonne les océans, allant de mission en mission dans le contexte de la guerre froide.

In May 1964, Espadon and Marsouin steamed under sea ice in the Norwegian Sea as far as 70° north. Espadon undertook significant modifications from 1966 to 1968, notably upgrading the boat's sonar, sail and rudders. Espadon has been a museum ship at the "ville-port" of Saint-Nazaire in the German-built submarine base since 1987. See also

Le 13 décembre 1985, il est sauvé du démantèlement par la Ville de Saint-Nazaire qui l'achète à la Marine nationale pour 1 franc symbolique. 22 - 23 août 1986 : Le dernier voyage Après deux ruptures de remorque entre Lorient et Montoir-de-Bretagne, l' Espadon atteint Saint-Nazaire le 23 août 1986.
